Read the Bible in 2011 ◊ Week 37: Tuesday
Then David said to his son Solomon, “Be strong and courageous, and act; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you until all the work for the service of the house of the LORD is finished.”
1 Chronicles 28:20
Tuesday’s Bible reading is 1 Chronicles 25–29. In these final chapters David continues his division of duties among the Levites in chapters 25–26. Chapter 27 lists his army commanders, the chief officers of the tribes and David’s overseers and his counselors. In chapters 27 and 28 he speaks to the leaders of his kingdom about the building of the temple and about his son Solomon.
David’s words of encouragement to Solomon in 1 Chronicles 28:20 about the work before him echo the Lord’s words to Joshua after the death of Moses. Having faced many daunting tasks myself—and I’m sure you’ve had them—I especially appreciate this verse. I found a calligraphy print of it years ago that I still have.
Chapter 29 includes David’s prayer and sacrifices and offerings to the Lord:
“…Both riches and honor come from You, and You rule over all, and in Your hand is power and might; and it lies in Your hand to make great and to strengthen everyone. Now therefore, our God, we thank You, and praise Your glorious name….”
1 Chronicles 29:12–13
The book finishes with the anointing of Solomon as king and the death of David.
